A Note From The Author :
What This Is Not
With admiring respect for Bartlett's, this is not a collection of "Familiar" quotations. Such of those as appear are noted simply to show a great writer's contribution to our language, under "Who also gave us." Our quotes are led into by words such as are described in our subtitle, "Words you're not likely to hear on the Crosstown Bus." And it is my aim to present them, not in a stonefaced dictionary style, but as the living things they become in quotation - presented, yes, with occasional attitude.
